I was introduced (or thrown into) the world of midwifery through my partner's advocacy and her first pregnancy. I must confess a certain ignorance and lack of interest in obstetrics or midwifery...being a typical selfish male, it just wasn't something I thought about. However, after my three experiences with them, I fully advocate their support in the labour and birthing process (in fact, I tried to convince my partner that she didn't need me, that she was in excellent hands, but alas, she insisted I participate...)

You mustn't think that midwifery is an all or nothing proposition. My partner experienced three different births: C-section, natural with epidural, and natural. But the care and attention during the pregnancy, birth, and after - with home visits and 24-hour availability; their down-to-earth explanations; and never any pressure to conform to their advice - always making you feel that it is your decision and they will support you...I simply can't imagine a more comfortable and "natural" way of dealing with childbirth.
